A Doctorate in Ayurved (M. D. Ayu.) and a science graduate (B.Sc.) in Botany, both from the University of
Bombay Dr. Narendra Bhatt has 47+ years of teaching, clinical, research and pharmaceutical experience.
His initial teaching & clinical experiences (11 years) were at the Government and private Ayurvedic Institutes /
Hospitals in Mumbai. He, moreover, was honorary advisor to national / multinational industry organizations to
derive database on Ayurvedic plants and to develop new products.
Having interest in research Dr. Bhatt joined industry in 1987 and worked in various capacities with different
organizations till 2009 (22 years). As a CEO (2003-07) he successfully managed Zandu, one of the largest
Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical organization in the country. Since then, he provides strategic & developmental advice
through Consultancy for Research & Innovation in Ayurved. He was Hon. Research Director & Adjunct Professor
at Bharati Vidyapeeth University, (2013-2017) College of Ayurved, Pune and National Professor and Visiting
Scientist at Haffkine Research Institute, Mumbai. (2013 onwards)
With elaborate multidisciplinary research on Manjishtha, Rubia cordifolia Linn. and in-depth research on
Rheumatoid Arthritis, he developed novel integrated approach to understand the disease process to design and
validate new products. He has coordinated 55 clinical studies on Ayurvedic pharmaceutical products. Dr. Bhatt
has developed therapeutic solutions in Skin Diseases, Hemophilia, Liver Disorders, Cancer Care and Aging
disorders. In March 2017 he was invited as a Presidential Scholar at the Columbia University, USA to present and
share his experiences. Over more than a decade he is actively involved in the field of Cancer in Ayurveda. In
October 2020 he was invited speaker at TRANS-NCI-NIH CONFERENCE (Virtual) on International Perspective
on Integrative Medicine for Cancer Prevention and Cancer Patient Management for Exploring Ayurveda for
Research Contributions to Clinical Oncology and New Therapeutics in Cancer Care.
Dr. Bhatt has made pioneering efforts, both in career objectives and in evolving new modalities. He has
evolved ‘MANTHAN’ for collective productivity, a ‘MATRIX Model’ for standardization and product
development, an ‘EVA Model’ for validation of CAM products and a ‘R & D Business Model for Ayurvedic
Research’.
A strong proponent of integrating knowledge base with technology, research and translational approaches he has
published several papers, has contributed to chapters and patents. These include ‘Complementary and Alternative
Medicine for Cancer Care in India: Basic and Clinical Perspective’ as a co-author (Springer) and a chapter
‘Assessing Ayurveda: Mapping the Forest or Counting the Trees’, as an author (Jessica Kingsley). He has a jointly
held patent for Parkinson’s disease and another for alcoholic liver awaited from USA authorities.
Dr. Bhatt has been a nominated member to several governmental committees including National Bio Resource
Development Board, Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia Committee and Governing Body and Scientific Advisory
Committee of CCRAS under Dept. of AYUSH, Ministry of Health. He was Member, Board of Studies, Faculty
of Ayurved, University of Bombay and has served as an expert on committees of other organizations. He is invited
to be a referee and examiner for the Ayurvedic and Pharma examinations of several Universities. Dr. Bhatt was
Honorary Ayurvedic Advisor to Indian Institute for Integrative Medicine, Jammu under CSIR. He was on the
Research Advisory Council, Academic Council & Ethics Committee of Bharati Vidyapeeth University, [BVU]
Pune. As Hon. Research Director he was guide to the faculty of Ayurveda, BVU. He is associated with
Advertisement Standards Council of India (ASCI) as an expert and as Member of CCC. Dr. Bhatt was on Drug
Discovery Committee, AYUSH Task Force (2015-16) and is on Cancer and AYUSH Committee (2017), under
Ministry of AYUSH.
Dr. Bhatt has represented Ayurved on several international delegations on behalf of the union government. He
was a member of the Core Group for a project on Indigenous Knowledge for Health under Global Research
Alliance to be funded by the World Bank. He is Technical Adviser to BENEFYT, EU.
Extensively traveled both in India and abroad, in last 35 years he has given nearly 100 seminars and talks in
Europe and other countries on subjects related to Ayurved.
He was closely associated with Ayurvedic Drug Manufacturers Association [ADMA]. He is associated with
IASTAM since, 40 years and is president of IASTAM – India. He has successfully organized national and
international meets on subjects of significance and edited and published several proceedings.
Dr. Bhatt has received 5 national and one international award.
He has been in a privileged position to observe and bring changes, both from within and outside, that has
added to his experience for factual prospective of the sector.
As a 4th generation Ayurvedic physician, he has always continued with Ayurvedic Clinical Practice.
